Hello, there is some black coloration on my sulcata’s tongue and I am wondering if it is cause for concern. Could this be mouth rot? Please see the photos attached.

** The slime is from the cactus, his mouth is NOT normally slimy **

Age: 3 1/2 years old
Location: Florida. Lives in an outdoor enclosure most of the time.
Diet is mazuri diet, zoomed grassland tort diet, timothy hay, bermuda grass, collards and kale.

He likes to eat poop sometimes… and he gets dirt on his mouth when he eats fresh grass… but why does the black stick to his mouth so much? He doesn’t let me touch his face long enough to scrub it off.IMG_8451.png

Looks like poop to me, does it come off after a while?
I think it might be poop, but I am not sure…

It’s really hard to clean it - he doesn’t like me touching his face very much. I haven’t seen it this black before, but it’s possible I just didn’t notice it.

Aside from his normal diet, he also eats collard greens, kale, and lettuce (on hot days) every few days. I have heard that greens can give them a black discoloration. It just looks strange to me, sort of like an infection.

Looks to me like normal staining from items which have been eaten. It is NOT mouth rot.

OK, looks like it’s nothing to worry about. Thanks for the insight 🙂

I just looked at the pictures again and to me it looks completely fine! the rest of the tongue is pink, which is good. so it’s probably just Poop! Nothing to worry about! :)

I will occasionally see him eating the tiny poop of brown anoles or frogs, our local wild residents. I have never actually seen him eating his own 💩.
