two disasters in one evening.

First I come home around 5:30 to find someone upsidedown and NOT moving. I drop everything to pick him up and the face was one of "what took you so long?" OMG I almost had a heart attack!! Who knows how long he was like that, but I was SO glad he was under the shaded area. I tried to settle my own nerves and give Peb a snack of clover. Chowed it right down! Okay! Whew! I go run an errand - only gone 45 min. I make his usual dinner, he eats and we get ready to do a little soaking/drinking etc. THEN I notice the toenail is RED.:( Figured since we are soaking we might as well try to get it a little cleaned up so I can see it better. Didn't seem to bother him, but they don't talk do they?? lol Anyway it did bleed a tiny bit onto the papertowel after I took him out of the water.

So now what should I do is the question of the day????????

What would you do if you discovered one of your kids or even you, yourself with this same bloody toe/fingernail? Do the same for the tortoise.

If it isnt pouring out blood... dont worry, it will/should clot. if not.. do you have a steptic ( sp) stick or powder, Qhick stop; if you cut yourself shaving?? If not.. cornstarch or flour work well too. set his foot in a small pile of it or blot it on the toenail.

oh,, and your biggest concern would be to figure out how or why he flipped and take care of that problem...
hope all goes well.

hey hey everyone! I've been away and appologize!

Pebbles did make a trip to the herp vet. That was on Tuesday - because I could not stand that way the nail was looking. Or I should maybe say it looked to be worse than it was over the weekend. Anyway they also did a full exam and he/she came out in "excellent shape". All the vet tech's fell in love with him!! Including one who used to own a nice big sully.

Pebble did end up having a avulsed 5th toenail. They said Neosporin the next 2 weeks just to protect the toe from infection. AND the BEST part, which I was surprised to hear - it will grow back!!! yippie :D

Laura, we did sort of figure out what happened. The corner hide I was using was the problem. I had seen Pebble climb up there once, just the day before this happened. Since it is made of wood, we are assuming that the nail got caught in the bark and someone was perhaps stuck there or who knows what, struggling to get out, fell off and over and well ~ the rest we know. The hide has been replaced with a nice square box!

Glad to hear that everything worked out well, and that you were able to discover the how's and why's so as to correct them.
