Looks like your baby will be a she when she grows up :) But usually it takes until they are 12-15 inches in size to really determine :)

I'm just curious about how you can tell?

the "U" shape of the tail scutes-I was told "U" is for female and "V" if for males ??

What do you think Scott? How do you tell the sexes if not for the shape of the tail scutes? Very curious :)

Female. Short tail. U shaped anal scutes.

AWESOME! so my research was correct? My Méraddyn has V shaped anal scutes-so am I good in thinking he is most likely a boy?

He actually has a long tail, he puts it up to the side. Does that mean anything?

Who has a long tail? The tortoise pictured in post number 1 of this thread has a short stubby tail that is characteristic of a female.

Not necessarily. This depends on the size, age and state of development. When they are young, most of them look similar and its takes some time for the secondary sexual characteristics to develop and become more pronounced.

ImageUploadedByTortForum1375557425.769552.jpg I couldn't get a really good picture, but you can kind of make out his tail tucked to the right.

I guess it's a she, it's just since i got her I though she was a he.

I can't even see the tail in that pic. If it were a male that tail would be laying along the back of the thigh and reaching almost to the knee. Guess I need to post some adult pics again...

I just realized I forgot to answer your question regarding how I came to my opinion(and that's all that it is).

If you drew a line on the picture along the outer edge of the anal scutes, other than those little nubs at the end, it is a rather large v like opening. It also looks like the supracaudel is starting to hook in too.

Females tend to have round anal scutes. I have never seen a v shape turn round, but have seen many "round" shaped ones form into a v.
Once again, just my humble opinion, and I am the most humble man I know! :)
