Hi everyone!
I have a hermanns tortoise named Ramona who is in an enclosure indoors with a combination of coco coir and organic soil as substrate. This morning I noticed some teeny tiny white bugs on Ramona’s water dish and promptly scrubbed the dish and replaced it with a smaller plastic one for the day while the regular dish is drying. I just got home and noticed more of these teeny bugs on the plastic dish. The bugs are minuscule — smaller than a grain of sand. I typically don’t mind bugs at all, but Ramona’s enclosure is in my bedroom and I don’t love the idea of bugs in my sleeping space. Her water dish is typically on the dark/cool side of her enclosure, but I put the small plastic one on the light/warm side when I replaced it this morning. Does anyone know what these bugs are, if they’re harmful to Ramona, and how to get rid of them/prevent them? I have attached a photo of them with my finger for scale, I tried to add a video but am not sure if I’m able to do so on this site?

Hello! Those bugs are called springtails and are nothing of concern, they actually make for a good clean up crew, they won’t survive outside the enclosure so don’t worry about them in your room🙂

I would still suggest switching the top soil for just coco coir or orchid bark. Did you get a chance to read through the links in your previous thread?🥰

Amazing, thank you so much! I did get the chance to read through the links, I am in the process of switching out the soil for coco coir :)
