Anything bigger then a 40g enclosure should have a 150w che on a thermostat to help control the temp to make sure it doesn't get too warm

Yeah i planned in a thermostat. But one 150w would be enough? Tight for money. If i dont really need another i wouldnt wanna spend it ya know. I just dont know how powerful they are. Been looking at the zoo med brand if that makes a difference. Good reviews.

And thank u for the help

Depending on the type of tortoise you have, You may not need any added heat at night. Many Greeks and Hermanns and Russians are fine at these nightime temps. In fact, its better than being too warm. If you decide you need heat, just heat a small area, not the whole thing. Let the tort decide how much it wants.

Too many people want to treat their tort as if its a human baby.

Now thats good info to have thanks. I dont need to heat the entire table.

I guess i could have mentioned i have a like month old leopard tort lol in which im following toms recommendations for anti-pyramiding :)

So i need my table rounding 80 constant. If im keeping it moist wont i have to heat the whole table? It would be nice to be able to heat just his side with the hide and not worry too much about the other. But i dont want more issues with mold and what not. thanks a bunch.

I would cover the table, that will hold heat and humidity in. you dont want to let the temp get any lower then 80 if you are going to keep it moist. I myself getting a month old tort on tuesday and my plan is to keep a che on 24hr have a basking temp of 100 and the repti sun 10.0 tube uvb. I have a closed chamber enclosure to keep the heat in and high humidity without spraying her to often. Make sure you have a good thermometer also.

Yup im covering. I was only curious if one che would be able to adequitly heat the table at night. I have a mvb for the day. and will use the che on the other end on a themostat. But like i said just curious if one would be enough for such an area. Idk how well they work. for example my mvb is alot less heat than i expected originally. Dont wanna buy 2 if i only need one and vice versa :)

Also good luck with ur new little one :) thank u and i have a $50 temp gun and kinda cheaper digital thermo hydro that seems very accurate. No worries :)

For a baby leopard on damp substrate you need to heat the whole thing. Scott really knows his stuff, that's why he prefaced his statement with "Depending on the type of tortoise you have..."

I have a 4x8x2' tall leopard enclosure and it takes 2 100 watt CHEs on a thermostat, spread out to maintain night temps, in similar temps to yours. I use an 80 watt flood bulb for day time basking, if they aren't out in the sun.

On a 2x6', I'd start with 2 60 watt CHEs and go from there. I think a thermostat is vital in this sort of application.

Wow...see...60 watt i was thinking id need more like what u have tom. Thanks a ton. Thermostats been on my list no worries :)

And after i read a second time i figured he was only refering to dry enclosures. Still good info for later on though.

Details appreciated. Exactly what i was looking for. Something just to base mine off basically.

I ended up putting 1" insulation all around my box when winter set in, but I think 2 60 watt CHE's will do it for a closed in 2x6'. Since they are on a thermostat, I don't think there is any harm in using 100's either. Just like a heat lamp, I run mine on full blast for a couple hours (no thermostat for this part) and check the temps directly under them. I keep it around 100 degrees or less and adjust the height of the fixture to get this temp. CHEs get hot, so be careful.

Thanks tom. Ill post pics once its complete in the enclosure section :) should be today if no hangups

Ill probaby look into sone sort of insulation too. Walls are pretty thin ceder panels. Frame is 2x4. Didnt wanna make it too heavy to move with the walls.

Each of my 55-gallon pens has one 150-Watt CHE hanging over it. I have been manually monitoring the temperature, which is not that hard, but can be a bit of a chore on some days. How much does a thermostat cost?

Its looking like any sort of reliable one is at least 50. Petco has a zoomed one for 50. Its nice it seems and zoomed always seems to have good reveiws. No such items at hardware stores i can find. Thats probably ur best bet. I went to pecto pet supermarket and petsmart. Thats the only one thats not just a dimmer. Lllreptile has same thermostat for 32 plus shipping.

I work graveyard so a thermostat is a necessity for me :) noone at home at night and thats when temps go crazy in my house since we have the heater on but a doggy door for our big dogs.

Manual checking is what i do now but yes it can be a pain. My girlfriend isnt too estatic to come over at ten at night and stay up to watch him and adjust and spray his area lol.

Im going to go on a limb and say if it can heat a 55g tank than it will deffinetly melt any plastic within a foot of it. i havent hooked mine up yet but id say ur fine as long as its not plastic. Otherwise id try to make an opening and hang it from the ceiling :)

James, be careful with using cedar for a tortoise enclosure. Cedar gives off toxic fumes. That's why its so good at keeping bugs out of closets and chests. In an open topped tortoise table it would probably be less of an issue, but in a closed in chamber with nowhere for the fumes to dissipate or escape, I am afraid it might be an issue. Just wanted to make you aware...

Thats really good to know. I was looking for that pathway park you posted at lowes but no luck. I think my current soil will have problems with molding.

And the cedar chips current in there are on the bottom and they are the light colored odorless almost. Much unlike the red cedar.

And the enclosure is made of cedar i beleive. Could be wrong but its wrapped in plastic and sealed off nicely.

Are you sure the chips are cedar? Fir bark looks similar and is often marketed as "Orchid Bark". That stuff works great and is fine. Personally, I just wouldn't use anything labeled "cedar" in a closed chamber. I've seen lots of small animals die from being in wire cages with cedar shavings. Hamsters and such. I spent 8 years doing the retail pet thing long ago. Saw all sorts of stuff...

Ah see u may be right. I threw out my bag for the chips. But i did buy it from tortoise supply at the expo. So i think ur right. I got garden bark brand organic decorative bark to mix up with what i already have today. Ingedients just says forest products but i opened a small hole and it doesnt smell at all of cedar.

Looked on their website and compared it to what i got from them. Its cypress bedding.
