I'm sure they must know what they're doing, however, it has been my experience with long term captive box turtle rescues (and from the size of those turtles, they're "long term"), they don't do well when just released like that. I have found that you have to acclimate them to living wild, not just dump them. Sad to say, I killed a few before I figured that out. My box turtle yard is like "livin' wild" and I used to just put all my box turtle rescues into my own yard. Some of them were found dead after a few weeks.
