Hi, this is my first post so sorry if it's in the wrong section. I was hoping to create new water dishes that fit into the encloser better and it's hard to find what I'm looking for in store. What kind of materials is okay to make a water dish out of, I was thinking a non toxic air dry clay but I'm not sure if it would be safe to use for a water dish and if not what other material can be used? What material have you used for similar projects?
TIA

The only water dish I've ever used is a terracotta plant saucer. Easy enough to find at any place with a gardening center and affordable. They hold up for a long time too.

I'm currently using a plastic plant saucer as I have found that terracotta plant saucers absorb the water much too fast and I have to refill the water dishes after less than an hour I know many people on here have had great success with them so maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've used a few different ones and they have all absorbed the water extremely quickly

there are glazed plant saucers that dont absorb water, but it presents a slick surface which could be unsafe for tortoise trying to get out of it.
I've seen lots of soap dishes that are made from some sort of plastic or resin that have a nice texture

How hot is your Russian's enclosure? It may be to hot and that would make the water evaporate really fast.

People have taken advantage of water seeping through the clay and into the soil for centuries. I am referring to these kind of things:

I believe if the substrate around the saucer is already saturated with water, it won't suck in more from the water dish, but this is just my understanding. Also, orchird bark probably won't suck in water the same way as coco coir for instance.

depending on the sizes of my tortoises, I use a paint roller pan for bigger guys and the plant pot saucers (terra cotta) for smaller ones

I use a terracotta plant saucer also. They have worked out great for my grand-tort Rock. As he grows, I just get him a bigger saucer for his water. It’s easy for him to get into to soak & drink water and they are inexpensive and easy for Rock to climb into to drink and soak.
