Do UV lights cause skin cancer ?

I was sitting in a physics lesson today, when we started doing the electro-magnetic spectrum. We went through the different types of radiation , and some of the effects of each type. When we got to UV , my teacher brought up the fact that skin cancer is caused by UV rays . This brought about the concern of the effect of the UV lights on us reptile owners.

So my question is this . Do our UV lights , be it mercury vapour , coil types , or tube types have any effect on humans?

Ive only ever heard of the coil types causing an issue , but not of the other types.

I think we'd need to spend lots of time “basking" under the lights for them to have an affect on us.
