What are some things I can grow for my hermanns tortoise? I’m just getting into gardening and would love to grow things for her. I just planted some Escarole and am growing quite a few herbs but am not sure what herbs are safe for her. I am also growing buttercrunch lettuce but have read that it is not very nutritious and to avoid it. What else can I plant (indoors for now, but I have a hydroponic garden system) that would be good for her?

Hi, any leafy greens would be good. Like kale, mustard greens, calandra greens, turnip greens, watercress greens. All of this should be fed in moderation.

What about things that don’t need to be fed in moderation?
Unfortunately, there is no single "superfood" that can be fed in bulk, variety is important. Generally, endive, escarole, frisee and other "chickories" are good staple. Some ornamental plants like geranium, mallow, snapdragons, campanula etc. can be added to the mix. You can also feed pumpkin/squashes leaves. There are a lot of options, actually (you can check thetortoisetable.org.uk for example).

There are special tortoise seed mixes (e.g. Testudo Seed Mix from Tortoise Supply), but I'm not sure if they are suitable for hydroponics - most plants there come from semi-arid regions and need lots of sunshine.

Have you looked into the testudo seed mix by tortoisesupply.com? Apparently it’s pretty good🐢💚
Yes! I have it! My only issue is since it’s a “mix” all of the seeds are mixed together. I wish they were separated so I could take care of them better! It’s hard to plant them indoors because of the fact that they’re all mixed together, but I have done it :)

Yeah I hear you on that, seed mixes can be hit or miss with me, it depends on how much effort I want to put in to separating each plant once they start sprouting😂it’s definitely easier when you have individual seed packets in terms of growing bigger plants. Mixes can be great for growing some tasty microgreens🌱

You’ve inspired me. I’ll totally plant some of the mix tomorrow.
