My male eastern box turtle [EBT] spends more time under the UVB bulb than the 4 others of mine combined times ten !
I don't know why. With my last batch of boxies in 2015 , the female EBT also spent more time under the UVB's than my Florida, Three Toeds and Gulf Coasts combined, as well.
Before I read this site I used the dreaded spiral bulbs. They almost killed my ornate box turtle but the turtle pictured happily basked right under it for hours with no ill effects apparent.
One breeder said that in his experience the EBT's needed more UVB and were more prone to eye/ ear ailments if their UVB was low. All of this is more anecdotal than scientific, but interesting nevertheless.
