What is a Gulf Coast Box Turtle? In the past, major herpetologists have said that they are nothing more than a cross between an Eastern Box Turtle and a now-extinct Box Turtle. Others have declared that they are a distinct Box Turtle but they have 3 regional color morphs. Recently, some say that there are likely 2 distinct species/subspecies of Gulf Coast: a Mississippi/Alabama Gulf Coast and a Florida Gulf Coast. The Pic below shows my 2 captive-bred Gulf Coasts: both female and very close in size. Notice how different they are in shell shape and coloring.
