I was wondering if giving my tortoises eggshells for calcium. I mean eggshells from chicken eggs instead of throwing them out after cooking an omelet.

Would it be harmful?

Thanks, I ground 3 eggshells after washing them in hot water and then drying them. Used a coffee grinder. Amazing pure white powder, almost like flour.

I'll mix some in with their romaine lettuce tomorrow.

After adding the internal contents to the cookware, I put the shells and whatever dribbling albumen there is into a bowl. After I finish cooking, I drop them in my female sulcatas' presence. They leave no trace after taking them down quickly. For a larger juvenile or animals of greater size, there is no need to further process them.

Great idea! Much better than throwing them away. I will be doing this too! :)

I've been using egg shells as calcium supplements for birds for years now and they seem to enjoy it much more than cuttlebone.

one important thing when using egg shells is to cook the shells (or boil them) as if salmonella is present it may be transferred to the tort.
