Both look good to me, the gun is an essential in my opinion. When you get it go outside and take readings off of different surfaces and you'll appreciate what the suns infrared heat does.
Make sure you temp your torts carapace in the sun. At 22°c air temp I got readings to 39° on soil and 31°c on my torts carapace. This is also why shade should always be offered.
