Hard to open eyes can be a humidity problem.

I had a similar issue when I first got my redfoot hatchlings and it was a humidity issue, as the Captain has said.

What is your humidity running at? If you live in a dry region, you may consider covering the top of your enclosure to assist with keeping humidity in. You can also use heat ropes in conjunction with a top: http://www.tortoiseforum.org/Thread...ure-via-Heat-ropes-Lots-of-pics#axzz1v8f68Gtm
I now have plexiglass covering 95% of my enclosure with a small hole cut out for my MVB.

This site has other great ideas for upping humidity:

Yeah, could be low humidity with a redfoot. Humidity should be at least 70%.

Also, could be not enough vitamin A in the diet, which can lead to dry eyes, too. Make sure your guy is getting enough dark greens and red or orange fruits. These are rich in beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A in the body. Things like carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries. May also want to give vitamin A drops (they are safe to use even as a precaution), or sprinkle some drops on the food so the tortoise ingests them. Also good to use a dietary supplement powder that includes beta-carotene granules.
