I have a question about fertilizers. I do understand that store / nursery purchased plants could be fertilized with products that combine fertilizer with bug repellant / killer that can be drawn up through roots into the plant. Certainly that could pose a threat to a tort, especially a young one. However, I don’t understand the resistance – almost panic – about fertilizing plants in general. Fertilizer is basically the compounds that plants need to thrive. The chemicals are pulled into the plant, processed, turned into “food” and used for growth and health. How is this bad for a tortoise?

My preference has been for ‘Miracle Grow’ myself. Though I’ve often used compost.

Now I will readily admit I am not a horticulturist, chemist, or nutritionist – especially for torts. I am looking at this from a logic and common sense point of view. So if anyone can give me a scientific reason for the avoidance of fertilizer with plants a tort might eventually eat I would love to hear it.

I'm with you, Mike. In my opinion, once the plant has drawn the fertilizer up into its system it is converted to what the plant needs and is no longer toxic to the tortoise eating the plant. However, it is imperative that one understands the difference between 'fertilizer' and 'systemic weed/bug control'. The systemics to control bugs might be very dangerous for a tortoise to eat.

Very good question.
Miricle grow is a chemicle that provides a plant with all its necessary needs. Its a synthetic mixture that is supposed to be non-toxic but, does leave salt resadues in the soil. I know in the horticulture world Miricle grow is a thing of the past. microbes and mycorrhizae are the new fertilizers. They help break down organics and allow the plants to gain better absorbtion. HOWEVER- some of the bags say not to use where there are grazing animals such as cows or horses. Interesting. I still think when it comes to fertilizing, compost and worm castings seems to be the way to go when a tortoise is involved. exspecially since they are closer to the ground and end up spending more time in the dirt. just my two cents.
