I live in Washington State (Tacoma area) and my Sulcata has pretty much outgrown the indoor tank. What now??? Who can help?

I don't mean to sound like I'm picking on you, but did you happen to think about the fact that sulcata tortoises get big when you bought him?

In my opinion, tortoises should live outside. I realize that you live in a state where outside year round is not possible. In that case, you have to spend some money and give the tortoise a habitat that will fit his needs.

He needs an expensive UVB light, a large space to be able to exercise and do lots of walking, good food (grazing is best but sometimes grocery store greens has to do), clean water and a hiding place.

Some people use a large book case with the shelves removed. Some people buy two large plastic totes, cut out opposing ends and put them together. Some people set up the tortoise in their basement. Some people build heated sheds.

Take a look through our enclosure section and I'm sure you will get many, many ideas.

At the risk of sound stupid...no, we did not think that he would get so big so fast. We've had him since he was the size of a quarter (I think about 6 years). Now I need clear and consice directions to do the right thing for him. And yes, we would like to build it outside.

Buy a bookcase and build it with no shelves. That is what I did and my Abby loves it.
