I currently have a glass tank, but I really want my tortoise to be as comfortable as possible. Should I exchange it for one of those plastic ones people have? If so, where could I get them?
I use a glass tank with no problems. However, I use it for a small leopard hatchling and only part time.
In your case with an adult russian tortoise you want as much floor space as possible. While the tank visually looks nice you need to offer the most room for your tortoise to be happy. Getting a plastic storage big or combining 2 will make your tort happier
If you can return the tank for $$ you'll have more than enough I'm sure to buy 1 or 2 large totes. Walmart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot all sell them to name a few.
Remember the height isn't as important and the length. Focus on that part if you make the switch.
BUT since you are in CA I suggest you make a very large and safe outdoor enclosure. Your tortoise can spend all of spring and summer days outside. You can keep your current tank as the night time/sleep area and it should be fine for winter housing, too. Since CA gets great weather off/on during fall and winter you can put him out on the nice days and only keep him in on the cold and rainy days.
Just reread my question, I have no idea what happened when I wrote that... Bu you pretty much got it, thank you! I did meant to ask if I should keep a light on outside overnight. Sorry for the confusion!
