I have a 7 y/o male Sulcata that I rescued. He wanders all over my yard eating the grass. My question is that when I mow my lawn and have the mulch from mowing. Would that mulch be safe for my homie to eat?

I mow with a reel push mower, so the clippings are nice and clean. A gas mower will have lots of dust and dirt in the clippings I think. I guess if you have nice lush grass, the clippings might be clean?

Yes it can be, but there are a few things to be careful of:
1. I use an electric mower to make sure there is no gas or oil leaking into my tortoise food. The push mower idea works too.
2. You have to be sure no toxic weeds or wind blown leaves get mixed in to the mulch.
3. The grass molds and goes bad very quickly, so it's only good for a few hours in warmer weather. Do not let it sit out in a pile overnight and let the tortoise eat it the next day. If it was in a very thin layer and dried out in the sun, then it is probably safe to eat the next day.

I depend on cuttings from my lawn for a year round food source for my four sulcatas. I use an electric Sun Joe 14 inch 12 amp mower with a bag. That I bought online from Home Depot for less than hundred dollars years ago. It has paid for itself many times over the years. During the warmer times I'll cut it and dry the cuttings for the next winter feedings after rehydrating them. During the growing season I feed them the fresh cuttings daily.

I only mow my front yard (pretty small), and I rake it first to get rid of any leaves (good exercise). I bag the clippings in grocery bags and put them in the fridge, I get 4 to 7 full bags. It stays fresh for several days in the fridge.
