I just got my Tortoise Mango on the 6th. He is a Greek tortoise and I'm having difficulty finding out what his subspecies is. I took the advice of the worker at Petco on what I should do for his habitat but I'm concerned it isn't suitable for him. When I got him he was active and eating a lot but now he just borrows in his hut. Can I get some examples of what a good setup for him would look like. Please and thank you!

I can’t help too much on the subspecies front, IDing subspecies definitely isn’t my forte, but I can tell you this tortoise already looks to be in adulthood, therefore needing a much bigger set up, you were definitely sold the wrong one, sorry about that, shops really take advantage of people.

I think these links will hopefully answer any questions you have, but please always feel free to ask more once you’ve gone over them!

This is a care guide from one of the most experienced members here

This one covers correct equipment(uvb, heating bulbs, lighting etc, your uvb type looks good but check brand and I’d check the basking bulb type, there’s also visual examples on mounting your lighting), sizing(you can get away with slightly smaller indoors if you can build a larger outdoor space when weather permits, but still sizeable, the bigger the better), appropriately maintaining the humidity, safe substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything, and a really handy diet link to check out! I know it says Herman’s and Russians but care is similar for Greeks

This includes lots of inspiration for an adult set up both indoors and out! The indoor bit has some good ideas to tackle indoor space whilst still providing the needed roaming room! Check comments too, I’m always adding to it. I know the recommended adult size is intimidating to some, especially if you’ve been lead into thinking he’ll be fine in a smaller set up(very common) but tortoises long term health really does rely on lots of roaming room

Lastly, this one here is probably most important to go over and keep on hand, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying😊

I really hope they help! Welcome to the forum🐢💚

Oh and just some quick n easy tweaks id make whilst you figure out a permanent set up, switch out that water dish for a clay terracotta saucer, sit it flush with the substrate, it’s much easier for tortoise to navigate, those store bought dishes are a bit of a hazard.

I’d also switch out those analog gauges for some digital monitors, the analog ones aren’t the most accurate, that one at the top will need moving down to get proper ground readings👍
