Hi folks,

I recently bought my first tortoise, a horsefield that we have named "sheldon"

We have all really taken to him and he is already one of the family! He is around 10 months old and he has a wee character coming through already.

Although Scotland isn't the warmest or dryest of places he loves being out in his enclosure in the garden on warmer days, and loves his weeds!

Inside he has a nice tortoise table for a home and a few rocks / slate / hills to explore. He does seem very content.

I've put a picture of the wee dude (or dudette as we are not sure) up. His shell seems ok but would appreciate any advice. He has a few white lines but I read these are normally associated with growth and will disappear over time?

His diet is varied with lots of green veg / cucumber/ kale / weeds, and he also has cuttlefish bones. I bought some calcium supplements but am unsure of how often to sprinkle this on his food?

Any advice or tips appreciated :)

Hi, Mike and a very warm welcome to Tortoise Forum to you and Sheldon.
Lovely little tort but unfortunately he is beginning to pyramid, probably from being kept to dry before you got him.
Humidity is the key, see http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/the-end-of-pyramiding.15137/
The bumps won't disappear completely , but will become less obvious over time as the tortoise grows.
You probably will need a closed chamber around your tortoise table if you haven't already.

Russian's do seem to have splendid, individual personalities..
good luck.

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice. I am a little worried about the shell as I had read about pyramiding and though it looked like it was going that way..

I'll have a good read of the threads you posted, as I want to do all I can to reduce the pyramiding effect.

Thanks

Michael
