I have 4 sulcatas and ones shell is all sunken in all the sudden (since the morning) it docent seem happy at all I need some advice nothing has changed and other 3 are normal :'( water is good and thy eat like pigs
She looks in bad shape I would suggest a vet visit ASAP, is the shell sinking in like as we speak or is it happening slowly over time. sorry for asking so many questions, But I need more info to even hazard a guess. Mouth rot can usually be helped with betadine but I would also suggest a vet for that.
I agree she needs to see a vet asap. How quickly did the shell collapse like that, is this something that happened overnight or over a long period of time?
I'm assuming over time she was in their hide the past couple days but that's norm at 5 am and I figured she came out to eat and such while I was at work it's not getting worse as of now I have her in the tub I scabbed her face to try to see if it was dirt. But it is all funky inside as well so I'm thinking mouth rOt and she hasn't eattin and that's why she sunkin in?? Is that about right? She's nOt super squishy just like sunken in and it'll move
I'm not thinking over night a couple days as I work 12 hr days 7 days a week today I went in their box with a heating pad for the first time in 5 days?
Ok the mouth rot and the sunken shell, are not related per se, but it could be the result of improper husbandry, how are they kept? since this is the only one out of three though that it is happening to there could be another source besides husbandry. If the sinking shell is happening slowly I would suspect metabolic bone disorder, Basically lack of calcium and sunshine. The shell rot is most likely improper husbandry, I would PM exoticdr he is a vet and may be able to offer more insight then I.
Welcome to TFO I hope we can help you. Can you tell us the size of your tort? How do you keep them? What are the temps? Do they have access to outside time? What do you feed them? Do they have a UVB light? Do they have access to water and a soaking dish? These are things that if not done correctly can result in MBD. I have done things that I thought were right and ended up it was all wrong. The TFO family are really great people and only want to help.
They are kept in a 40 gall breeder with a big water dish, a heat lamp with 10.0 UVB, wooden hide with a heat pad under tank, food area in middle I may be feeding too much fruits and too much romaine and spring mix? They will nottt eat collards, love spinach and dandelions. I feel like such a bad owner
Their water dish isn't deep just enough for them to get in an drink and their feet get wet they have placemats as their floor an they get changed weekly they go outside weekly or more depending on everones sceduals and weather
I'm afraid your tortoise is very sick. It hasn't been eating for quite some time, and the sunken shell is what happens with an advanced and active case of MBD. The tortoise is going to require immediate intervention by a vet and aggressive treatment or its going to die.
I knew someone who kept a young sulcata in an aquarium on the kitchen counter for three years. Besides being slightly pyramided, the tortoise looked ok. One day it looked fine, the next day it was sunken in like yours, and soft. The next day it was dead. Hers was a lot younger than yours, so you still have some hope. This is not something you can put off. You need to do something right away.
Yvonne is right, he is very sick. The way you have been feeding is a problem. Please search sulcata diet on this forum for proper food. Are the others pyramiding as well? If this one can't be saved hopefully we can get you on the right track for the others. Sulcatas should rarely if ever have fruit. Spinach is not good as well and romaine has very little nutrition. Please don't beat yourself up, you are here now and lets see if we can help you.
wishing you and the little one best of luck !! positive thoughts go a long way. you're here now, identified some problems, so lets get him/her to a vet and back home with his family !
i have to agree on the diet with Missy. our sullys should never eat fruit and spinach is definitely not good. we're here to give insight and help. a lot of prayers and hopes coming from this site toward you guys
If this one has it, the other most likely do too. :-( You need to build a pen outside asap to get the other ones into. Sulcatas cant live indoors. They need Room to roam, sunshine and good diet with calcium.
It also possible that the other torts are bullying this sick one. So they need to be seperated. The sick one will probably need to be tube fed good food with calcuim. A vet can show you how. Where are you located? we can help you find a good vet too.
With the other 3, if you cant get them outside or wont have the room for them, then you really should consider finding them new homes. i know that sounds harsh, but you need to think of them and what is best. I hope we can help them.. do lots of reading and asking of questions. lots of years of experience here..
Well L is at the vet for the night they do have an outside pen but the dogs, rats, raccoons, foxes and stuff will go in and they are too small for them to not get carried away and be a meal im in north eastern PA
