Hello
I am about to embark on constructing a new tortoise enclosure. The space I have on the top of the shelf I am using is 16x60 which should be plenty for my two redfoot yearlings. I am planning on putting a 16x30 board with told on top and putting wood vertically on all four sides to make an open topped wooden box. Then I want to put some tile on the bottom for cleaning purposes. I plan to close off 1/3 of the enclosure with a latched lid for their humid hide with tons of sphagnum moss and make it so they can enter from the open part. The other 2/3 I want to be open with coco coir, soil, wood chips, plants, a water bowl, a feeding dish, and a combination UV/heat bulb attached to the side (very secure).
My main questions are:
How high should the sides be
What live plants can I use
How do I create a proper heat gradient (especially on the side with the lid... Heating pad? Gradient?)
And what other things to I need to keep in mind for my tortoises' safety and comfort when I am making this?
Thanks y'all
Hannah, Lucy, and Lilo
