Hi All

I have just joined the forum today and am very thankful to find a specialist website that can offer me some help and advice.

I live in North East England.

I have a 4-5 year old horsefield tortoise called Alice. We purchased her at a garden centre in May last year. I had her checked over by a vet a few months later and he said she was healthy. He didn't do any fecal checks though - should i ask for one?

Also i am currently housing her in a large vivarium which is half chippings and half topsoil. She loves digging! I have a heat lamp at one side and a UV light in there too. She also has a water dish, a log to go under/climb over and a place to hide in the corner.

I feed her on - dandelion leaves and weeds, turnip (she expecially loves it cooked), broccoli, carrots, occasionally a little lettuce/cabbage and rose petals/leaves when they are available. Is there anything else at the supermarket I can get her to help her diet or anything in the garden?

Also - is she too young to go outside and if not how long can she be out for? admittedly i feel a bit overprotective about leaving her in the garden as we have a cat that lives next door and im also worried about her eating something poisonous in the garden. Can anyone offer me any advice to put my mind at rest? I was considering buying one of those rabbit runs that you can put on the grass and letting her potter about in that.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks all

Cara :)

Hello and welcome from another British tortoise keeper.

Your tort will definitely appreciate the opportunity to go out in the garden. You could use a rabbit run, or use some blocks or wood to fence off some of the garden for her use. If you are concerned about other animals getting to her, some sort of wire 'lid' is a good idea. As you've noticed Horsfields are excellent diggers... and climbers... so you need to take care yo escape-proof anything you house them in :)

Personally, I don't worry about cats. They are fascinated by Joe and don't know what to make of him. If he starts to move, they run away! Foxes and dogs are another matter though. While Joe has never been bothered by a fox, a friend's tortoise did get chewed by one... mercifully she was OK.
