I have had Donny now for 4 months and he's a happy little thing who seems to respond to my voice now and is not particularly shy or anything but when I get him out for a run around the house he always bolts for dark corners or places where he can hide away. Would you say this is normal behaviour? ImageUploadedByTortForum1396792842.593168.jpg

Yes. It is a wide open space and he is scared. He is trying to find a place to hide. There are threads related to this where most members recommend that tortoises are not allowed to roam outside of their enclosure. One reason is that the tortoise instinctively must hide from predators, but there are also many warnings about tortoises ingesting nonfood items.
