I was wondering are you supposed to put a piece of slate under the CHE in a box turtle's enclosure? If you are, wouldnt it get hot and burn the turtle when it goes to bask?

Not sure of you have to use One or not. it is good for warming the underside along with the top. However, You do have to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

I don't own box turtles, but I do keep pieces of slate under the basking locations for my redfoots. If you pick up an infrared heat gun you can take the temps of the rocks and raise or lower your light accordingly to achieve a good temperature on the rock(s).

You can place it under the basking spot, or not, it's not something you necessarily have to do. If you do, that's where having a temp gun comes in handy, you just "point and shoot" to make sure the rock isn't too hot. Mine was $35 and looks like a car remote, really easy to use.
It'll be a long while before you catch him/her basking, at 7 months, mine spends at the most an hour topside, shielded under the plant's leaves, before going back to her burrow.

Ha! I'm a slow typer, the answer already came ;-)

I brought back 2 nice pieces of slate I picked up in Newfoundland by the sea, they look great in there, I use one of them as the feeding rock and the other one is used by my red foot to bask.
