I have read many care sheets but the humidity % varies. Some say 50% and some say lower than 30%. The humidity level in my house is about 40%. Should I keep it like this or should I try to adjust the humidity in any way?

It does depend on the age of your tort. The younger ones need more humidity because they can't store as much water and I believe they should be in their fastest growth phase.

I keep my tort room at about 60 % humidity; but I'm in a humid area.

If you keep their substrate moist and keep water available at all times; a lower humidity is probably OK for an adult Russian.

What is your substrate?

The Russian range is 40-60 the lower being for older to adults, the higher being for about two and under to hatchlings. They should really have damp substrate, but you can moisten the underneath substrate if you need to up the humidity. Or give them a humid hide.

I would think of the 3 inch Russians as pre teens and the 4 inch Russians as teenagers when compared to human growth cycle.

I would try to have a deep coco coir substrate to hold the moisture and allow your tort to dig into the substrate for moisture. This will bring your humidity up a little.

The fact that he's still growing as a sub adult would cause me to want a higher humidity.

Good luck! :)

You can do a personal study "The psychology of a teenage tort". :)

Chapter 1) How to keep your tort from climbing the walls.

Chapter 2) How to prevent your tort from becoming addicted to dandelions.

Etc.

Enjoy!
