I really want to add some plants to this enclosure, however I am skeptical about just buying from Lowes or Home Depot. What are you guys ideas on this?
Ps -I moved the hide to the far left after I took this photo
The same few plant growers supply plants to many, many stores and chains, so it kinda doesn't matter where you get plants from, unless you know of a source for organically grown plants. I really like pony tail palms and compact Boston ferns. I've found the palms recently at both Home Depot and Wal-Mart. They are tough little plants, grassy in appearance, my torts don't eat them, and they hold up to being climbed over. The compact Bostons are also tough little things.
There are lots of spineless optunias, maybe some small enough to go in your enclosure, but you may not find them in the stores. Online suppliers are awesome!
How about growing your own from seed? I know our local WalMarts still have the 20 cent packages of seed including turnip and lettuce mixes. Or have yourself a muskmelon/cantaloupe and plant those seeds. Another common thing is to buy a bag of cheap birdseed and plant that. Might go out to your own yard and try transplanting some dandelions, clover, plantain, ect or even get seeds off of them.
I always sprinkle a bag of Spring mix seeds all over the enclosures. They love eating the little sprouts. I use a lot of pothos too. Just saying what I do....not that it's best.....I buy little plants in home depot and plant them right in their pots. The substrate comes up to the rim of the pot. Them I just water them and the substrate stays dry. This is for my RF's. For the Box Turtles that have to stay inside, I do the same but keep the substrate more moist.
