Identification and advice?

Found this guy cruising around my yard. First, can you guys help me figure out what it is? And second, is it out of the question for us to keep him? It'd be our first tortoise if not, but I'm a good learner. We're not far from the "desert", could take him back there.

Red eyes, 3-5 claws each foot, foldy little pointy tail. Heard him hissing once. Ate a dead beetle.

Update: central New Mexico, USA

P.S. that's him attempting to sneak into my house haha.

Hello and Welcome. It's a Box turtle. Not sure what kind, @Yvonne G can help with that. If it's native to where you live, then it should be put back in a safe area close to where you found it. If not native, then it's someone's pet and an attempt to find them should be done before you take him in as your own.

Looks like a three toe - Terrapene carolina triunguis.
