I've been following Chevy too before I even joined, sorry about that...but I'm definitely glad your staying.
Just got my Leopard from Turtles and torts inc and he's in great condition, seems they do something right rearing the young guys, hope whichever one you pick you enjoy and he enjoys his new home!

I am glad your staying. Before you get too serious about looking for another tortoise, you do need to have a good talk with your parents. You need to be able to have them supporting your tortoise ownership. I would hate to see an emergency come up with the new tortoise and you not be able to get the equipment, medicine, or vet visit you need in a timely manner for your new tortoise.

That's a very good point.
And I have a little story because I just love to go off topic
When I was 17 I got a puppy and while I paid for everything by myself, I talked to my mom and she agreed that if there was ever an emergency situation she would help pay (and I would pay her back.)
When he was 10 months old he got into chocolate and had to spend the night at the ER vet. The bill was around $500. Thankfully I could pay it then (but I'm too poor to pay that now :p)
I am now a poor college graduate living in my mother's home (kill me now) and we still have an agreement that she would loan me money if anything happened to one of my animals.

So definitely talk to the parentals, and start saving those pennies sister ;) At the very least have a good amount in an emergency fund.

Katerina, I think not only is the "long talk" with your parents a very important aspect of getting another tortoise---establishing a relationship with a VET, is as important. Your family includes other animals. While cats and "resuced Greyhounds" may not be as "exotic" as a tortoise and a Vet's practise may not have very many "exotic patients", all Dr.s have vast networking to resource from. When my son brought Mortimer to NJ from Michigan, Morty was already close to 7 months old. I took him to the family Vet---2 days after he arrived. We found out that his shell was a bit soft---and after 2 weeks of liquid calcium soaks, he was fine. This was the first Sulcata that my Vet had treated since she was in school. A year later, when Mortimer had a "prolapsed cloaca"---She new it was beyond her expertise--so she sent us to a "Specialist" that was 45 minutes away from home. Because of all the testing[X-Rays, MRI and bloodwork] and medications---the 4 month ordeal added up to close to $2,000.00. Luckily, I was in a position to be able to afford Mortimer's care and that was MY responsibility for accepting him into our home. My point is---any new "pet" should have an established place to go for medical care--even if just for "well checks". This being important in the event of an emergency. So maybe the next time one of your other animals needs a Vet visit--you could go along with your Mom/Dad--and ask some ?'s of the Vet and listen to what his professional knowledge has to offer. Being "prepared" for an emergency that "never" happens--is better than not knowing what to do if it occurs. JMO

I am so sorry for your loss! I just read about it! ( i had to go back and find out what happened!)
I as well as many others know how much you loved him. you will never find another chevy, but you will find another that will steal your heart. they have a way of doing that!
I had to re-home my bert (thats why i have not been around, been kinda bummed) and i miss him so bad. but Alaska isnt the place for a redfoot! he is in florida now with a bunch of other red foots to hang with. but i still feel the loss.
agian i am sooo sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm sorry to hear about Chevy. There always looked something off about him. Eyes closed in 9/10 pictures. It's good he's resting now. Maybe next time purchase from a reputable breeder instead of a pet store.

You should call that breeder and tell him what happened. Maybe he will give you a discount of a freeby. It cant hurt to try

Hm.. I thought that I read you got him at a pet store. I'm sorry to hear that.

I don't know about turtle and tortoises. I got my first red foot from him and he was sickly. not long after I got him he developed an ear abcess then septicemia. I think that I just got a bad one, but it made me quite leery.

Glad you are staying around. Wonder if you could find a mobile exotic vet in your area. We found 1 here. He happens to work for a zoo as well. This is great if you happen to have animals that aren't easily transported or if you can't get a ride to a vet.
