I have had the little fellow 3 weeks, he is awake and very active for about 12 hours of the day, he takes several naps but does not return to his hide until about 15 minutes before the 12 hour mark,he does this like clockwork every day, Is this normal for stars ? I have never noticed this daily routine with any of the other types of tortoise's I've raised. He is growing, I set the caliper when I got him and today had to open it 1/16 of an inch, he is now exactly 2 inches.

I have no direct experience with star torts...however, I know that the CDTs here are like crazy schedule freaks....it is funny, up almost at the same moment...it is funny, like a bunch of tortoise zombies....they drag themselves out of their burrows and hides all within moments of one another (and they are all in their own yards) and they have their peak activity times and then you can tell that they are winding down for the night...they even move to the same sunning spots throughout the times that they are out....so yes, other tortoise species are neurotic about schedules....lol

I am still learning the ways of the RFs here and they to seem to have their own schedule...

I am sure the others will chime in with their species specific experiences...:p

If its warm enough for my redfoots to be out they always want to get back in the night time box at about 3:00 pm. they wait in front of the enclsure door. My 2 little radiated are on a schedule to. basking light on they come out and get under it,then they walk over to the water dish for a drink. Then they wait for weeds on the food tray. I think its good to have little ones on a schedule

Since it still gets a little cool during the night, we still put all our adults into their heated houses at night. 9 times out of 10 all of our indian stars have already found their way back into the houses, rarely do we have to go looking for them.

The leopards on the other hand are scattered all around the yard every night.

My hatchlings really never go into their hides. They spend most of the day and evening near the warm side of the tank. They just never leave the spot where they were when I turn off the light. They will sometimes go into their hide when they feel stressed or when they need to cool down a bit. This is something that I see during the day. Maybe as they mature a bit they will start to retreat into their hides. The older star that I lost, spent most of his time in his hide. He only came out to eat and sometimes would spend a little time out to warm up...

our stars have precise timing for certain things. They'll wake up about 9 ish. (that' when the "sun" comes out) and they'll be active eating for a bit about 11. by 12-1 they are groggy and take that nap. Then wobble about at about 4-5 and find food to munch. Right after that they will walk around abit.. then sleep till the next day. (they sleep WAAYYY too much). It's naps in between. If we take them out they'll be exploring for a bit.. then find a nice cool spot to sleep in. (It's super hot in Malaysia our tempts go from 40-45 in the sun). so in the shade its about 30 (which is our cool).

if we bring them in. they'll sleep straightaway. We figure that they're a bit like their parents (us) and just like to laze about a whole lot.

They are our new TV and we can watch them for hours (or the time it takes for them to eat!). hehe

Priceless comparisons. :D I have to observe closer whether Luka is a Tortoise Zombie as well... well she does get up at about the same time in the morning.
