So I've recently got a box turtle from a friend. The friend has had the turtle for a couple of years and has always thought she was a she.. I'm looking for and experts advise on her gender though because I've had mixed results .
I'll try and get a better picture of the vent. Someone told me that eye color had something to do with its gender (red eyes were male brown eyes were female)

Many turtles with red eyes are male, but like ColleenT, I have a male with very light, almost orange-brown eyes. Based on the picture, it looks like the vent of a female but the angle could be decieving. The bottom shell also looks flat, indicating a female. Males almost always have a convex curve (curving up towards the inside of the turtle) that aids in mounting females for reproduction.
