just mud?

hiya, recently ive built my russian tortoise barry a burrowing box out of bricks in the shed at the bottom of the garden, but im wondering if im doing wrong by just adding some good old garden soil (minus stones etc) into the box and compacting it, or should i be adding sand to the equasion as well and if so why? please help.

I think the only reason to add sand would if you wanted the dirt to be looser.

ok cool thanks for the reply, i think ill just stick with the mud then, he will no dought be able to dig into it as he's an avid digger when he's not asleep, lol. cheers again
