I am such a proud mom today! Mac explored the full depth of his predug burrow and came back out a little later (under the temptation of food). I was concerned that the slope into the burrow would be too steep. While we will still make it more gradual, it is nice to know that he did navigate it on his own. Here is a picture at the bottom! :)MacBurrow.jpg

Very cool. Just be sure it can't flood if it should rain and you can't get him out.

I understand the flooding danger. Many thanks for the reminder!

That is an amazing picture. Do you have more pics of the set up?

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that is it literally a sloped entry/exit with a landing area at the bottom. We have caliche (rocklike soil) where Mac lives so the burrow was dug until caliche was encountered, making walls for the burrow. The top to the hole is wood and metal covered with soil. The burrow is about 3 feet at the deepest. Here are a couple of pictures -

Very natural. I like the way the soil slopes away from the entrance. He will stay nice and cool!

That is the hope! He now lives just north of Tucson with my sister and her husband and it will be the hottest summer he has encountered.
