Hey this is just a random question, does anyone else find their tortoise can seem "moody" sometimes???
Today I went into the room the tort tables are and as I had a few things to do, I didnt go over to them like I usually do to take them for a soak and to their outdoor area, I simply carried on with the housework. When I went back to the torts my hermanns was trying to get out and had totally wrecked his house as he had been expecting to go outside. When i picked him up to take him outside, he snorted at me (which he rarely does when handled) and spent the whole day ignoring me, whereas usually he would chase my trainers and sit by my feet in the sunshine. Was he totally stressed that his routine had changed by ten minutes? Or was he just being a moody tort???

Emrys was in a mood with me recently. I just asked my fiancé, and he said it was about four weeks ago. We both remember it, and I know I'd done something to cause it but I've completely forgotten what it was.

Edit: I just found where I'd written it in another thread. He was trying to be more lazy than usual, and I tried to encourage him to eat by putting him near his food. He walked back to his basking spot slowly, so I put him back near the food again. He then got grumpy, and eventually went and dug himself a hole. He never usually digs.

Honestly, I think he was just being a tortoise going on about his tortoise business and someone has waaaayyyyy too much time on their hands... :)

But wait, what else is there to do but watch torts and do chores to take care of them? (OK, OK, there IS the rest of our life, of course...)
That's why torts are more fun than people.

It often fascinates me that we think we know what the tortoises want more than they do. "Well, of COURSE I need to move him over to the food/warm end/water dish/etc.? How would he ever figure this out on his own?"

(Exaggeration for effect, but we've all done it at some point!)

My RT never complains when I wake him up and put him in a spot of sunlight. He's super chill. The only time he ever huffs at me is if I pick him up. That's instant huffing. I can watch him eat, I can follow him everywhere he goes when we're outside, and he won't complain. He really doesn't mind people at all.

I took him to work this week to show him off. On the way over he was panicked, but after a while, he fell asleep on my lap, said hi to everyone in the lab and then, on the walk back to the car, he was absolutely fascinated by traffic. I have him in a semitransparent container for travel. He kept reaching his neck out and staring at every car that moved. I felt like I had a curious little doggy!

That's cool. Sometimes we see new and interesting things when we have our torts in unconventional situations. I do educational shows and film shoots with mine and it's always fun watching them to react to new situations.
