"perlite" =Perlite is a generic term for a naturally occurring siliceous rock. The distinguishing feature that sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from four to twenty times its original volume due to the rapid expansion of water within perlite....once this process takes place, you are left with a very light material. It is used in the horticultural industry quite often and used in conjunction with other type soils to provide good drainage.....as it does not have good water retention and lets the soil "breath".What is the white stuff?
