can anyone work this out for me please,maths isn't my best subject lol,
I want to buy a new car,a diesel one costs £2000 more than a petrol,
petrol car does 47 miles to the gallon at £6.41 a gallon
diesel does 72 miles to the gallon at £6.66,
so what i want to know is how many miles would i have to travel to cover the cost of the extra £2000,i've been trying to work this out for a month lol

cost per gallon/miles per gallon=cost per mile
£6.41/47=0.136
£6.66/72=0.0925
difference = .044

2000/.044 =45454.55 miles

I think. It's still early.

I think the answer is 4,545.45, using jaizei figures. I also think,that is what jaizei meant to say as 45,454.55 miles seems way too high.
Don't forget. You most likely won't get those exact miles per gallon. First, there is the break in period, which is usually around 500 miles. Second, they figure miles per gallon under the very best of conditions that would probably be impossible to find. They also don't figure in passenger or cargo weights. You will get close, but usually not exact.
I just bought a new Jeep. Miles are suppose to be 16 city, 19 highway. I get around 14 city and 17 highway. Good luck

I think it's right. To check:

total miles/miles per gallon = gallons of fuel
45,454.55/47=967.12

45,454.55/72=631.31

gallons of fuel * cost per gallon = total cost of fuel

967.12 * 6.41 =6199.24

631.31 * 6.66 =4204.46

difference = £1994.78

It's a little off due to rounding.

I don't think that's acceptable. I rounded to make it easier to understand but I don't like being that far off. So from the top:

cost per gallon/miles per gallon=cost per mile
£6.41/47=0.1363829787234043
£6.66/72=0.0925
difference = 0.0438829787234043

2000/0.0438829787234043 =45,575.7576 miles

To check:

total miles/miles per gallon = gallons of fuel
45575.7576/47=969.696970212766

45575.7576/72=632.9966333333333

gallons of fuel * cost per gallon = total cost of fuel

969.69697 * 6.41 =6215.7575777

632.9966 * 6.66 =4215.757356

difference = £2000.0002217

Much better. :)

Over 45 thousand miles seems like way to many miles just to make up two thousand dollars. Unless I am misunderstanding your answer or the question.

It is because the difference between the two is so small. If it were in dollars, it would be less than a nickel per mile.

But it is right. The difference is tiny between the two due to differences in fuel prices
