Never owned a tortoise. Help please.

Hello,

I live in New England and I am very interested in getting a tortoise. I'm finding a lot of different information online and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed. I was at a reptile shop and fell in love with a very friendly and curious red foot tortoise. I'm assuming she was an older one because it was a good size. My question is are they difficult to take care of? And could I put it outside in the spring and summer during the day? Obviously in an enclosure with shade.
Any advise will help. If I decide to get her I want to make sure I provide her with what she needs.
