Okay so I just bought a baby leopard, and I just want to make sure my setup for him is perfect!

He's only about a month- 2 months old, so he's still pretty little. When I bought him the man said to keep him on paper towels and to keep him in my 20 gallon cage. I have a 75 gallon that I plan on putting him in once he gets bigger, even though that probably won't be for a couple years.

Anyways, right now I have a substrate bottom of coconut fiber with a few hide houses. My main question is about the substrate. I just want to make sure that it. Is okay for him since he is so little... If not -any suggestions? I will try and add a picture of him too so you guys can see his size.

Thanks so much for you're help!

I suggest you ditch the 20 gallon and use the 75 gallon tank right away. He will appreciate all the extra room!

Have you decided on the conditions you will use to raise your leopard? A lot of us like it "hot and humid" because of the smooth shell results it produces. Use the search tool and read up on "closed chambers", "end of pyramiding II" and check out some of the indoor setups people use to keep their leopards in humid conditions.

Welcome to the leopard club!

You don't think the 75 gallon will overwhelm him? I'm just worried about the cage being too big and him stressing out about the size and gettig sick or something :(
And thanks I will look at those posts too!

It won't stress him out. They love to have room and the more room the better. They walk for miles and miles a day in the wild to get food that is scarce. Never enough room!

The bigger the enclosure the better. If your tortoise has access to the three H's he/she will have a long healthy life. The 3 H's... Hydration, Heat & Himidity. Best of luck!

Okay thank you all so so much!! It really is helping. I also have read that coiled UV lights are bad for their eyes... Could anyone offer suggestions as to what to use instead?

Thanks again. I really really appreciate it!

yes, the coil types do tend to cause eye problems, so better safe than sorry. a lot of people use mercury vapor bulbs (mvb) which produce heat and uvb rays. or the long tube bulbs work well, too. but you would have to add another light for heat.

and the bigger the enclosure the better. if you can keep a temperature of 80F than i say definitely use the larger tank.

excited for you and the new baby. check out the two links below my signature for tom's threads on closed chambers and raising a new baby. i also would ditch the 20 gallon and go straight to the 75 gallon. i just started my new baby in a 55 gallon and he's already growing quite a bit. by the time i put a hide in there, feed, and water bowls, it's already getting crowded. have a great time with "him" and keep browsing this forum and asking questions. you'll learn all you need to. :) congrats!

Everyone already answered you and they are right..the 75 will not be to big ;)

I'll put it to you this way, my hatching at 4 months old had an outdoor pen that was 20'x6'and loved every inch of it. He has since been given a different pen but its still 17'x8' ...so no worries, the 75 gallon will be great :)

Okay thank you! I'm planning on switching him over this weekend. With the much bigger space I'm planning on giving him several different climates to move about in !
