Hi everyone ! My mother adopted two tortoises from a family member and I was wondering if anyone’s can help me see what species they are . From there I can determine how to properly care for them . Thank you !

Hello and Welcome. They are a type of Box turtle. Not sure on which kind. Others will be able to help on that.

Those are young box turtles, probably Terrapene carolina triunguis (three toed box turtle). But from your location, they could also be gulf coast box turtles (Terrapene carolina major). They like to bury in a MOIST substrate.

What kind of bedding can provide that moisture they require ? And thanks so much for replying !

Thank you ! For now I’m just spraying the bedding each day. What tactics do you guys do to keep your bedding moist ?

I dump water in the corners once a week and mist the sides of the cage daily.
