Replacing the substrate in my tort's cage and decided to take some pictures of it. Hope you enjoy!
Whatcha gonna need:
Substrate! Here, I used tropical soil from All Living Things, but any sort of coconut husk type material works fine.
A pitcher! Something that you can measure quarts in.
A container! Something moderately large, depending on how many bricks you're expanding.
Process:
Step 1:
If you are replacing substrate, be sure to dump out the current substrate either in a compost bin or garbage can. Place your tort(s) off to the side where you can keep an eye on them. In this case I put the tort in the sink next to where I was filling the tub with water.
Step 2:
Fill the tub with the amount of water required per brick! In this case, I needed 12 quarts.
Step 3:
Cut open the packaging of the bricks!(Use adult supervision, or just don't cut yourself!
)
Step 4:
Place the bricks in the water to expand!
Step 5:
Wait! Allow the bricks to completely absorb the water.
Step 6:
Wring out the substrate and place them in your tort's enclosure!
Step 7:
Allow the surface of the substrate to dry, then rotate the substrate by putting the bottom layer on top, to avoid growth of mold!
Step 8:
Return any plants, dishes, hides, and of course, tortoises to the enclosure.
And voila! You have successfully replace the substrate in your tort's cage! With daily management and waste removal, the substrate ought to last several months.
