Hey everyone! I just got a Rf about a week ago. He's 3 years old. I got him at a reptile show in Woodbridge, VA. His name is Mow. He seems to be in good health, but I have a few questions.
I feed him what seems to be a lot for a tortoise, but when I take him outside to get some excersize all he does is eat all the dandelions and clovers in my yard! I'm not sure if I'm not feeding enough or if I should ration him? Also, I'm not sure how many times a week to feed him? I've been feeding him every day because various sites say various things. Help!

Hello :D

To be honest I just guess lol I have 5 so just put in a bunch of weeds, when they walk away I remove what’s left. Some eat more than others and if I think one has had his fair share I will remove him from the food. But I don’t let them have their fill on fruit and protein, and give them a set amount, but to be honest the amounts I give I’m just guessing at. I think the thing that lets you know your not feeding too much is there weight gain and growth. If they are putting on weight but its slow and steady, same with the growth and its nice and smooth, then the amount you’re feeding should be fine.
I feed mine everyday too. Only once though in the morning

Grats on your new acquisition!

Nothin' beats the beak smackin' flavours of naturally grown outdoor straight from the ground goodies.
Kinda like the difference of a carrot from the grocery store, and one pulled fresh from the ground and hosed off with a garden hose. Almost no one will choose the store bought if given a choice.
Just sounds like your tortoise has a bit of a refined palate for outdoor snacks.

I feed mine everyday. Usually a pile of greens equivalent in size to one of the tortoises. There's always some leftover... But mine are also both under a year old.

I feed Dale whatever he wants to eat. I take it out when he's finished. He loves vegetables, fruits and protein. I feed him something everyday. Congratulations on buying a Redfoot anymore question? :D

He has a little bit of pyramiding (It was somewhat an impulse buy :) so I didn't know much) going on, what should I do to prevent it? I've only had him a week so I don't realy know how to. :>

Hi T: Welcome to the forum! There's a fellow here on the forum who has a couple of web pages about Red Foot tortoises. It would be worth your while to take a look: www.turtletary.com
