Hi
I have had this pair for a few weeks already.
The male is the darker one.Supposed to be a breeding pair but male is significantly smaller and lighter than the female.

I don't know anything about Pancake tortoises, but usually this is the case...the males of the species are a bit smaller than the females, and usually a bit lighter.

Thanks Yvonne, the male is about 185g and female 424g quite a difference.
Do you think he could be fully grown.
they both gained a few grammes in the last few weeks since they arrived.
On the care sheets I read most mention weights up to about 1lb but it never specifies about male weights in particular (being smaller and lighter)
Thanks
Louise

They are nice looking. Really love the color of the male.

So I've heard rumors that there may possibly be a pancake sub-specie that is indeed larger than what we've typically seen in the trade. The 2 I have are what I consider large for pancakes. Male =210+, female= 310+. I had been concerned that I wouldn't be able to find a female large enough for my male in that most females offered are of the 4"-5" size, then a friend came through for me and hooked me up with Bisquick, Buckwheats new wife.

They look beautiful! Good for you.

I personally have learned to never underestimate a little male in the turtle/tortoise world. Some of my smaller males have far outshined their larger counterparts in the lady killing department.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.
I sure hope he is a lady killer Anthony!!
I hope to have eggs one day from these.
Hope Bisquick is productive for you Cowboy-Ken
I never realised how pretty their shells can be-all seem to be very variable with patterns and colours.
thanks everyone
