Ok, do you know if the che's get to hot with out the thermostat? Che's are sold at my local pet store, but the thermostat is not. I will have to wait a few weeks to put money on my debit card and order it online.

CHEs do get hot while in use however, if it's in a ceramic fixture and not resting against anything combustible you shouldn't have any problems with overheating.

THe CHE won't get too hot, but it might make the ambient temperature in your tortoise enclosure too hot without the thermostat to regulate it.

No you can't. Its not safe.

The best one's I've found are at Home Depot for about $12. You can order the same ones on line at Homedepot.com for about $9. They have an 11" aluminum dome, a ceramic base and a long heavy duty cord. They last forever and they are safe for our purposes.
