So three years ago I bought two cactus pads from the produce store. Now I have about 9 or 10 large plants growing in pots, I just bring them inside for the winter. This year however one actually is producing fruit. I would have never thought I'd be growing cactus fruit in Northeast Ohio!

I literally just pushed the pads into the pot of dirt, water once in a while and bring them inside for the winter. It's actually one of the easiest things I've ever grown. My torts love it.

I'm in Michigan. I threw four pads in four pots this spring. I lost one, not sure what happened there. It just rotted. The other three seem brand new, but no new growth either.

Most people water them too much. You shouldn't water them at all for the first month after planting. This is easy in my climate since we go 7-8 months at a time with no rain at all. Dampness in the soil is the usually cause of a newly planted pad rotting.

They need heat and full sun to grow well. And the right kind of sandy soil helps too.
