What ways are there to kill ants outdoors that won't harm tortoises and won't seep into the ground making grasses, etc. inedible?

Diatomaceous earth. You can also use essential oils in water (peppermint is probably most common) as a deterrent.

Use Terro ant baits. Its just sugar water and boric acid, so non toxic. They take it back to the queen and it wipes out the whole colony.

Where can I pick some up? Is there only one type or grade of DE?

I got mine from Amazon. Make sure it is food grade, the other kind is for swimming pools and it is very poisonous.

Like leigti said, make sure it's food grade. And Amazon is probably the easiest source but some stores will have it. Sometimes in the 'health/supplement' section, sometimes with the pest control stuff. Occasionally feed stores will have it.
