There are two posts on the local craig list warning about Sulcata requirements:

Are you the author of these ads?

I would disagree with you that lettuce is bad. Too much of anything isn't good for any living organism, but the way these advertisements read I think is way off base in terms of not feeding lettuce.

There is also going to be some backlash on the forum regarding the statement about not breeding them.

I do like the bit about protein though! :)

Not the author, just found them on our craig list postings. There are a lot of hatchlings available right now. So, just think this is someone trying to warn people on how large these friends will actually get.

Maybe they are just trying to warn people about how big they get, but I think that they are a bit overdoing things. Telling people to not breed their tortoises is a bit much. Also, I think that some lettuce is okay. I would not do it on the daily basis but every so often is not going to hurt them. I also think that telling people to go buy pellet food for them is also a little over the top. Of course it is okay to give it to them, some, but I would not make Mazuri their main source of nutrition. I give it to mine twice a week. I also thought their reference to the hay was funny. My babies will not touch the hay. I have tried since day one and they won't eat it. The poster made it sound like all babies love the stuff. I think the poster needs to be a little more well informed. I don't mean to ruffle any feathers but I did not like the posts as well as I would if they didn't act so superior. It is just my opinion:)

I personally like that at least a warning on some of the correct info is getting out along side the ads for the babies being sold. I have done the same thing in our local CL. I have done it about tortoises needing water and with tortoises and dogs not mixing. I don't think they are acting superior, I think they just care enough to try and reach the uneducated idiots that buy a sulcata, just to get rid of it a year or two from now, because it got too big. The lettuce thing, little over the top, but s/he isn't trying to educate the people that already have a clue, they are trying to reach the idiots that don't. If everyone on TFO put some educated ad in their local CL and then referred them to TFO just think how quickly we might be able to educate the idiots on the proper care and sizes of torts. I will keep doing it

I think the point they were trying to get across was that here in Arizona, and I'm sure in California. People just want to breed these animals for money. There are so many for sale here right now, its crazy. I think it was a good idea. There are so many torts that need homes here also..its sad..just my opinion
