Oh Wow, Laney! I wanna be your tort in my next life!!!:p

Here's Darwin's first enclosure when he came to our house - converted from a 60x90cm kitchen cupboard
I was using sand mix but it was not a great idea...
download (2).JPG

Then got this one using 60x120cm rabbit cage, changed substrate into coco-coir mix - Darwin enjoys digging a lot more now!

@ Laney, very cool! So much space. Did you make these or buy them?

Darwin's home is very creative as well! And Jeremy, I haven't seen any tortoises in tanks yet. How many gallons are those? Do you think a 50 gallon would suffice for a 4 inch tort for a few months?

That gives me the idea to just somehow connect my glass tank and a wood enclosure. Hmmmm :) thanks everyone!

I've redecorated but haven't taken any new pictures yet. But I keep mine in an aquarium also. My temperatures and humidity are spot on. It's great.

But this was my old "dry" enclosure that I ended up throwing away.

@ abclements, LOVE THE GLASS COFFEE TABLE IDEA!!!!! Definitely gonna find something like that at a thrift store or Craigslist! Exactly the kind of inspirations I was looking for! :)

~~

@ abclements, I'm just wondering how that glass does under the heat of the lamps?

Ya I love it! It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb like my last enclosure did! Just note that mine is only 4.5 ft by 2 ft, so it's definitely on the small side for most torts, but it should last for a while!

The glass does great! I cut a hole in the glass slightly smaller than the heat lamp (I bet you could pay somebody to do it if you're uncomfortable with the idea, but it's pretty simple after watching a couple YouTube videos!) I also lined the entire inside with a silicone caulk because I was having a molding problem. That took a couple days but has been so awesome since!! Long story short I put about 60 dollars into it to get it ready for dirt and stuff. I had to plexiglass the sides by myself, so that was the expensive part lol.

Anyways, glad you liked it!!! :)

How did you plexiglass it? My dad is a stone mason so I'm sure he can help me out with it. But how much was the plexiglass? Still love the idea.

I think I spent 35 on the plexi. I just bought sheets that were the right dimensions for the holes and chalked them in.

I have a 40 gallon for my 4" Russian but do let him out all day and use it for when I'm not home and at night. I've changed it a few time and have covered the back and sides as he tries to get out but am able to keep temp and humidity darn close to perfect based on feedback. I have a 20 gallon for my 1" hatchling. Same concept. Here are a few of each.

40 gallon

20 gallon

Wheat grass and thyme in both so they can nibble on stuff outside of their feedings.

@ mr turtle, I like yours, but it would just be too small for me considering I can't let my tortoise out all day. So I'm going to try to somehow incorporate my 50 gallon with some sort of "tortoise table" arrangement and see what I can do. Thanks for the inspiration though! How do you keep the humidity and temps perfect??

@ 7oasty, that's awesome! I'd love to get a better look at it, feel free to post more pics!!! Love how big it is, I bet your torts love that! :)

It's actually one tort, and he tends to hang out on the top level.

It's kinda hard to get it all in one pic.

It cost about a hundred bucks for all the supplies.

I don't know ;). Luck I think is part of it. In use coco coir, a tube UVB light and a ceramic heat lamp both on from 7am - 7 pm unless outside I turn the UVB off and leave the heat on. I spray down the whole enclosure once a day and water the plants. Hot side under the light get to 85-90 for the large tank and 95-100 for the small one. Both cool sides range from low to high 70s depending on how warm the house is. Humidity really kicks up at night when I turn the lights off. I think part of it is the glass sides that help and the screen top (keeps cat, toys, and kids out)

Baby T gets a soak daily and Mr T every other day.

I'd love to have more room but that won't happen inside. I have some grander outdoor ideas but for now the 5x6 garden works.
