OK! My Darwin (girl) is getting big fast. Two years old 13'' x 9'' and over ten pounds. I don't know if I want to breed her someday or not but I do know that I don't want to get a male for her. My question is this,,,
A friend has a large male Sulcata. If I decide in the future that I want babies. Can I just bring her to him for the day? Maybe more then once? Will that work or do they need time to "date and develop a relationship?" Haha! I don't know the courtship of tortoises?? Are they like dogs and just BAM! get it done? Is there a season for breeding? OK! stop laughing at me, I just really don't know?

On the West Coast Sulcata are like feral cats. There are too many of them and a lot are turned into tortoise rescues and homes are hard to find. I know there are a lot of people who do breed Sulcata but I don't think that's really the right thing to do. You figure they have maybe 20 or more eggs in a clutch a couple or three times a year. Can you find responsible home for all those babies? I know several people who operate tortoise rescues and some are now turning away Sulcata. Zoos won't take them either...Think long and hard about it first.
I know I'll catch flak for my opinion, but I have seen first hand how hard it can be to find homes for dumped Sulcata. That's how I ended up with Bob actually...
Oh and it's pretty much wham bam thank you Mam; only slower...

I think that depends mostly on the size of this male and his temperament. I would leave her with an obviously docile male that isn't to large to hurt her, but I wouldn't chance it with a really large male. Especially if that male has never breed before.
My 16" male is super chilled out and never shows aggression to me or his ladies, but that may be due to him being the only male surrounded by females.

I do have a lot of friends and family that say they want a baby but they would all have to prove their dedication first, and I would want one myself but that's it. And I don't want to breed her more then once. If that! Just something I'm thinking about but it wouldn't be anytime soon. I was just wondering if it could be done with just a visit or two?
