When I buy my russian I am planning on taking him to the vet for a check up and fecal check. How much would all of this cost normally? How often do you guys/gals bring your torts to the vet and how much does it usually cost? Thanks! :)

For my reptile vet, there is a standard 65$ exam fee for new patients. Everything else is extra.

I think mine was $50 or $60 plus $20 for a fecal. I plan to do this yearly to check up on his health, although some people only recommend an initial visit to establish the tort as a patient in case of an emergency, the fecal test, and then only returning if there is a problem. The first year however I got the little one two fecal tests a few months apart. It was recommended to do this in case the life cycle of the parasite slipped by the first test. This happened to us--he had a coccidia likely before we got him, and it was missed by the first test but picked up by the second one.

Are you planning to get a hatchling or order tort? Captive bred or wild caught? I assumed with a CB tort I was safe from him having parasites, but not so true with shared housing with hatchlings. It can happen to everyone despite precautions, so it's recommended to be prepared. Best wishes.

Every Vet is different and the region of the US is different also. My Vet for exam and fecal is $150

Different state to state and Vet to Vet. In Billings MT my Vet sees any new patient (cat-dog-bird-tortoise) for exams free. The test cost as normally and we just did a fecal. What other test do folks do ?

FYI-Old thread.

That is awesome new pet visits are free! I have only heard of a fecal float test being done for a healthy tortoise, no more (blood is very tough to draw for example, so not normally done as far as I know). My vet's exam does include listening to the heart, internal temperature, and the general look over. I'm actually still surprised how cheap a vet visit can be. I pay $50 for about half an hour of a vet's time, plus some time with the tech. No idea how they make money off of that. The medications are reasonable too.

Maggie-That sounds high! Ick. You should come up North to the Seattle area and pay less than half of that for your torts to see Trevor's vet, and see me too. :) $50 plus $15 for the fecal is what I paid last week.
