Radiata tortoise and protein food

Hi everyone! I'm really curious is it in the wild radiata tortoise are occasionally eating protein foods like insects or eggs? I'm really confused since the breeder where I've got my tortoise is giving her torts once in a three weeks a new born mice and advising me to give mine tortoise an egg or even insects. I've been told here by a few experienced breeders that they never give their radiatas any animal proteins, but is it actually natural for the tortoise in the wild to be purely herbivores?
